Lots of people are looking for online jobs these days, with many finding a new career doing something that makes sense to them. However, finding the right job online is just as tricky as finding a “real” job – if not even slightly trickier. The way I see it, there are two reasons for this:
- Most online jobs require you to work from your home, on your own schedule. This may sound like the ultimate freedom – but is actually not so easy to do successfully.
- Often, you don’t work on a fixed salary, or a fixed amount of hours – you simply get paid for your performance. This can also be tough for some.
So when I said “finding the right job”, I might have said “finding a job you can, or want to, hang onto”. You see, there are plenty of jobs on offer, but they are not all suitable for what YOU want and need. This is why you need to take the time to decide what you want and need from a job:
- Are you looking to make extra cash?
- Do you want to do what you do now – but without the commute?
- Would you like to change careers completely?
- Start a business?
- Get a job – just any job?
For instance, many online employers give you a lot of sales talk about making thousands every month selling some product, when in reality, the market is already too crowded and everyone else is way ahead of you. This sort of job might be ok for making a bit of extra money, but in some cases you will find, after a while, that you cannot sell enough for a full-time pay. Other jobs require you to answer surveys, stuff envelopes or do simple typing jobs for money – all of which can work for you – to a degree. A trained typist may be able to make a decent living doing data entry tasks, but if you are a two-finger typist like me, probably not so much.
But what if you actually have some skills? Perhaps you are a very good proof-reader, maybe you know a few programming languages or how to do 3D graphics? In that case, you actually stand a chance of getting decent work online. There are websites specializing in sourcing jobs for freelancers of all kinds, which could easily be you! How about sitting at home, doing freelance programming, and earning a living? Not bad!
You have to know what you need from a job, but you also need to be honest about what you can offer in terms of skills. Also, being the best proofreader in all of upper Patagonia won’t do you much good – if you are sick to death of proofreading! It is not only about what you CAN do, but also about what you WILL do. Deciding on the right balance between your wants and needs, as well as what you will – and will not do – is going to a big help – if you do it before looking for online jobs in earnest.
