A lot of people might have a horrible boss, but not even know it. There are some very specific things that your boss might be doing that could indicate it is time to work somewhere else, or with someone else. In this article I will be going into the things that most likely indicate you have a terrible boss.

Terrible Boss Observations

Do you have a boss that is difficult to speak with? Or how about a boss that cuts you short every time you speak, or who makes it impossible to learn anything? Well, if you are employed somewhere where you are experiencing these behaviors from your boss, then it could be a sign you have a boss who is not capable of doing his job. A lot of the time these traits come on suddenly and are difficult to discern. An employee most likely wants to do as good a job as possible but due to the behavior and lack of communication by his boss it makes it literally impossible to do so.

Dealing With Your Horrible Boss

Depending on your situation, your boss might be difficult to confront or not. It is important to always stay diplomatic and professional. A lot of the times you will notice that your boss is the one who has a problem being diplomatic and professional. Perhaps your boss threatens, makes up stories about you, or even bad mouths you to other co workers behind your back (bordering along the line of harassment). If this is the case it is not acceptable for anyone to continue working in this hostile type of environment. Some states have what is called “at will” employment, which means that an employer or employee can severe employment at any time. Unfortunately it some states like California, this “at will” employment clause means that a company or “boss” can harass you, or do anything they please as long as it doesn’t violate any protected harassment categories such as sexual harassment or harassment based on race. In some states, however, workplace bullying is not legal. Additionally, don’t think that if you are male, and your boss is male, that you also can not be sexually harassed. A lot of the times a boss might be married and have children, but he still might be a closet homosexual. Make sure to report any violations of sexual harassment to the appropriate organization.

Observing Boss’s Behavior Towards Others

In some cases you might find treatment towards you tolerable, but you might see other’s such as interns treated very poorly. If you notice that others around you are being treated badly, or have issues with your boss, it might be a sign of what could potentially happen if you get on your boss’s bad side. Remember, work as hard as you possibly can and be professional and diplomatic. Never sink down to a boss’s level of unprofessional or difficult behavior.

Horrible Boss Conclusion

I am not saying that it is likely to happen, or that it ever will happen, but it is important to be aware of your surroundings and your interactions with your superiors and coworkers. Most of the time problems can be resolved with simple meetings, emails, or communication. If for some reason you are working with an impossible boss that is incapable and unwilling to communicate, you might need to seriously consider employment elsewhere or working under someone else. In some cases the boss can be fired or terminated, but most likely the company will take the side of your boss even if he is obviously wrong. Keep this in mind before moving forward with anything. I should also mention that you most definitely don’t want to complain to HR about issues with your boss because HR never has the employee’s side in mind. They are there to only look out for the company and will even lie to cover their own position.
