The power of influencing others through humor is often overlooked. A lot of the times humor is not considered crtical in the art of persuasion. The reality is, however, that when you engage others with humor, you are doing much more than just making them laugh.

Truly Understanding the Art of Persuasion as it Applies to Humor

Humor puts an audience at ease, and makes them more willing to open up. After your audience is comfortable with you, your audience will be in tune with what you are communicating to them. Your audience will be drawn to the person who can make them laugh, and thus will become more receptive. The most important piece of this, however, is that the one who can use humor will be remembered and looked at in the highest and most positive regard. An individual who uses humor is often remembered even long after the encounter. When utilizing humor to your advantage, almost everything you say carries more weight than a message coming from someone who has not built any sort of credibility or repore yet. It has been really surprising to me that the power of humor has not been considered more by people. Humor is such a powerful tool that can be used to have such a significant impact over others. Using humor as the art of persuasion can easily distract others and reduce their tendency to analyze what you are communicating to them. Remember, humor can be used to disarm almost any audience. After you have people opening up to you, laughing, listening, and trusting in you, you can get away with telling them almost anything. Just because you are using humor, don’t forget that it is still very easy to communicate a very important and serious message. Almost every individual, no matter from what culture, will happily welcome and appreciate the value of a laugh.

Getting people to laugh with you opens them up to your ideas. You laugh more, you like me more, and if I can persuade you through humor to laugh at what I am trying to tell you, you will be so much more likely to go along with it. If you are able to gain this skill and incorporate it into your every day life as you interact with others, you will almost always find tremendous benefit.
